Anzeige Das Europäische Zentrum für mittelfristige Wettervorhersage (EZMW) macht die Daten eines neuen KI-basierten Wettermodells verfügbar, das merklich genauer arbeitet und gleichzeitig etwa 1000 Mal weniger Energie für eine Vorhersage benötigt. Das teilte die Forschungseinrichtung am Dienstag mit und erklärt, dass das Modell namens AIFS (Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System) das erste einsatzfähige Vorhersagemodell sei, das für die breiteste Auswahl an Parametern auf maschinelles Lernen setzt. Die Verfügbarkeit werde positiven Einfluss darauf haben, wie die nationalen Wetterdienste der 35 Mitgliedstaaten – darunter Deutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz – ihre Vorhersagen erstellen. Wie die mit traditioneller Technik erstellten Vorhersagen werde das System mit täglich mehr als 800 Beobachtungsdaten gefüttert, die von den unterschiedlichsten Sensoren gesammelt werden. Anfangs würden damit einzelne Vorhersagen erstellt, Ziel sei aber, damit jeweils 50 leicht abweichende zu erstellen. Mit solchen sogenannten Ensembleprognosen soll die ganze Bandbreite der möglichen Wetterverhältnisse dargestellt werden. Später sollen dann Hybridmodelle aus physikbasierten und KI-basierten Modellen bereitgestellt werden. Die KI-Vorhersagen werden viermal täglich erstellt und sind dann als Open Data verfügbar. Anfangs ist die Auflösung aber noch geringer als jene der physikbasierten Modelle, heißt es vom EZMW. Die Freigabe erfolgt nun weniger als drei Monate nach der Vorstellung einer KI-basierten Wettervorhersage der Google-Tochter Deepmind . Die hatte erklärt, dass das hochauflösende Modell GenCast kleinräumig das Wetter über einen Zeitraum von 15 Tagen besser vorhersagen kann als das EZMW. Noch beeindruckender war, dass für die Erstellung kein Supercomputer, sondern ein einzelner Prozessor ausreicht. Das kann man jetzt wohl auch beim EZMW, dort spricht man von einer um etwa 20 Prozent höheren Genauigkeit der Ergebnisse.
