Carousell HK reiterates warning against email sharing to avert frauds Carousell Hong Kong reiterated its caution to users against sharing their email addresses during an online transaction to stave off frauds, as a ‘new’ phishing link scams were causing them monetary losses, local media reports. “Customers never need to provide email addresses to receive and make payments,” said Chen Suling, chief of staff at Carousell HK, quoted by Anue Juheng . Citing official stats, local media reported 23% year on year escalation in online shopping fraud cases to exceed 9,000 or 33% of tech crimes during the first 10 months of this year in Hong Kong. Of total online shopping fraud cases, 640 “new type of fraud” incidents took place on Carousell HK and involved more than NT$36 million. The number of such cases were 330, involving NT$25 million between August and October. Suling said the marketplace banned the email sharing in 2022 when it launched its digital payment service for buyers to pay via AlipayHK or credit card, said Suling, according to MingPao . Fraudsters used to email unsuspecting buyers of phishing links to trick them to fake Carousell payment platform and bank page and steal them of money. It was reported that Carousell phishing link scams had also occurred in Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia. According to Carousell, all of its official emails end with @carousell.com or @thecarousell.com. Carousell added new payment protection and delivery features to its app in Hong Kong in August. Carousell will use machine learning and artificial intelligence to quickly detect suspicious accounts, create programs and functions for safe and secure trade, advise against use of chatting to conduct digital transactions and promote user awareness to prevent fraud cases, it said.
